ESTUARIES
Book Description
First published in 1941, ESTUARIES (Esteiros) is a harrowing and poetic portrayal of child labor, poverty, and resistance in the industrial outskirts of Portugal — and one of the most vital works of 20th-century Portuguese literature. This first English translation by Tiago Silva brings to Anglophone readers Soeiro Pereira Gomes' searing portrait of working-class life under the Salazar dictatorship.
In giving voice to \"the sons of men who were never children,\" Pereira Gomes captured the brutal realities of working-class youth with lyrical clarity and historical urgency. Set among the esteiros — the tidal creeks and channels where the Tagus River meets the land — the novel follows a group of boys whose lives are shaped by the rhythms of labor, hunger, and small acts of rebellion. Gomes' unflinching eye captures both the brutality and the beauty of lives lived at the margins, in a work that stands alongside the great neorealist novels of Europe.
This new translation is both faithful and fearless, reviving a classic for a new generation of readers unafraid to confront the past. ESTUARIES reintroduces a forgotten Europe and a timeless call for justice.
