8th House Publishing is proud to announce the upcoming release of Sammy Stein's, "Women in Jazz: The Women, The Legends & their Fight" for September 27, 2019. Available for advance ordering - 20% off -HERE-

This book is all about women in jazz. It charts their journeys, celebrates their presence, hears their voices, wonders at their prowess and revels in their being. We hear from female agents, arrangers, composers, musicians, PR people, radio hosts, record label managers, singers, writers and more. These are their stories; their views of jazz and how they see the future. The established performers share their years of experience whilst those newer to jazz reflect on observations and changes they have seen.
Containing interviews and first-hand accounts, this book is witness to the generosity, profundity and positivity with which women have responded and the energy they have put into their lives in overcoming challenges.

8th House Publishing is now receiving poetry submissions for the maiden edition of her Contemporary West African Poetry Anthology.
Send all submissions to Hannu Afere at:
This anthology is intended to present the range of experimental writing produced in West Africa since the turn of the millennium. All entrants should have a country of residence in West Africa.
The guidelines:
We are looking for poems that move us, that might make us laugh or cry, or teach us something new. We like both free verse and traditional forms—we will try to publish a representative mix of what we receive. We will be reading a lot of poems, and only those that are unique, insightful, and musical stand out—regardless of style.
WHAT DO WE WANT?_________
We want poetry which attempt to answer questions about contemporary Africa and African-ness.
What is the present truth and beauty, and from what does it derive?
Is there a spectrum between what is ‘authentic’ and the political/cultural narrative? Is there a spectrum between the culture that can live; the life that can be lived and is real, and a social, economic and political apocalypse? Should we worry about extinction of intellect, imagination and humanity really?
WHAT WE DO NOT WANT____________
Trauma porn.Poverty porn.Hate speech.
Do not forget to include position-statements, biographical notes, and an index where necessary.
Good luck!
Darren C. Demaree's collection NUDE MALE WITH ECHO examines and challenges male vanity, power, and expectation. While exploring the place of his gender in this world, Demaree's attempt to expand upon the expectations of "what makes a man," while drilling down into the artistic framework provided by the body and aging, provides a new landscape for these modern questions.
NUDE MALE WITH ECHO, Demaree's thirteenth full-length collection, utilizes fresh language, energy, and abstraction…
Twoxism is an invented word for all things two — among them, love, life, friendship, and relationships.
What began as a poem-photo collaboration project between two life-long friends — Maria Haro, a visual artist, and Claudia Serea, a poet — resulted in a refreshing lyricism of urban photography and poetry. TWOXISM is a work that finds beauty in unexpected places and sees the mundane with redemptive eyes. A city love story, tender and gritty at the same time, it ex…

ABOUT THE BOOK
In Nietzsche’s Footsteps is a philosophical travel memoir. A thrilling, vicarious journey provides the setting for an earnest discussion and pragmatic reflection on elements of Nietzsche’s biography and philosophy. In particular, the book wrestles with the contrast between Nietzsche’s philosophy of individualism–which goes hand in hand with his own isolated life, and the author’s life as a family man. Along the way we share parts of Nietzsche’s biography and reflect on some central ideas of his philosophy, including ways in which our culture may or may not have followed in his footsteps as well.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
JONATHAN R. COHEN is a professor of philosophy at the University of Maine Farmington. His first book was Science, Culture, and Free Spirits: A Study of Nietzsche’s Human, All-Too-Human (Humanity Books, 2010), and his next project concerns Nietzsche’s philosophy of music.

A landmark collection and a continent's voice in print — AN ANTHOLOGY OF EAST AFRICAN LITERATURE brings together the richest currents of fiction, poetry, and drama from across East Africa. Edited by Beatrice Lamwaka and Joshua Mali, two distinguished figures in contemporary African letters, this volume assembles an extraordinary chorus of voices: established masters alongside emerging talents, urban and rural perspectives, oral traditions in dialogue with modernist experimentation.
From the shores of Lake Victoria to the streets of Kampala, from Nairobi's literary salons to the storytellers of the Rift Valley, these pages map a region in full creative ferment. The anthology spans generations, languages, and aesthetics — a testament to the breadth and vitality of East African literary culture at a moment of unprecedented global attention. Each piece is a window into lives shaped by colonial legacies, postcolonial aspirations, and the eternal human questions that transcend borders.
For scholars, students, and general readers alike, this anthology is both an essential reference and an immersive journey — a book that belongs on every shelf devoted to world literature, African studies, and the living tradition of storytelling that refuses to be contained.
BEATRICE LAMWAKA is a Ugandan writer whose work has been shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing. Her fiction and journalism explore themes of conflict, memory, and healing in contemporary East Africa. JOSHUA MALI is a Kenyan writer, editor, and scholar dedicated to amplifying the voices of East African authors and building bridges between Anglophone and indigenous literary traditions.
