She quickly understands that to realize her personal emancipation, she must join the chorus of the crowd that she hears manifesting on the streets. At first, she idealizes the leaders of the movement, and then slowly returns to a more pragmatic and realistic view of the group, as she matures and the novel progresses in time. I've known Frederick Bryson as far back as my mind can explore memory's darkening corridors. We grew up together in the mountain fastnesses of North Carolina's Great Smokies in a town, Bryson City, named for one of his ancestors.
